1997 schedule and results
An incredible race with an unbelievable ending!
Jan 10, 1998 - LA Coliseum
Southern California had been experiencing something odd for two days before this event -
rain! And 30 minutes and 1 hour from race time it was pouring down on the fans driving to
the event. Upon arrival to downtown LA we were greeted with no rain and clearing
skies. The track was wet, very wet, this was going to be fun!
The coliseum was as full as we've ever seen it and the typical of past Coliseum crowd grew to an astounding 61,855 fans. There was a great deal of excitement in the air. Jeremy McGrath on a Chaparral Yamaha, the champion Jeff Emig still with Kawasaki, Doug Henry riding the Yamaha 4-stroke 400. A new season was about to begin, and nobody knew quite what to expect.
The first race of the evening was a 125 heat race on the sloppy yet rideable track. The deep mud, for once, slowed the 125s making them noticeably slower than the 250s. Riders had to take it very easy feeling there way around the track - one mistake and you were down. In the end it was Michael Brandes (Suz) coming out on top. In Heat 2, John Dowd (Yam) simply outclassed the field and rode a smooth race to the checkered flag.
As the evening progressed the track dried a bit and became easier to navigate without having to be extremely cautious. All-in-all, it made for great racing and fantastic viewing. Heat 1 for the 250s had the audience pumped as it included McGrath, Henry on the 4-stroke, Windham and LaRocco. This heat lived up to all expectations as Lusk (Hon) rode a great race to win, Henry (Yam) and the thumper held off Windham (Yam) and McGrath (Yam) to take second. It was impossible to tell who the fans were cheering for most, McGrath or Henry - both crowd favorites. It looked to us Super Mac wasn't completely comfortable on his new Yamaha. He was smooth through the whoops but looked out of sorts, to a degree, in the air and through the corners. How many riders could look this uncomfortable and go so fast?
The second 250 heat featured as much talent as the first, including the 1997 Supercross champion Jeff Emig. Racing was at times tight and very exciting but Mickael Pichon (Suz) surprised everybody by pulling out to a substantial lead over Larry Ward (Suz) and Jeff Emig (Kaw). The finishing order was Pichon, Ward, Emig, Albertyn and Totelli.
The 15 lap 125 main was close in the opening stages with Stephane Roncada (Hon) leading Dowd (Yam) in a close race. Early on they swapped positions a few times pleasing the crowd to no end. After a few laps, however, Dowd took the lead and began to pull away. Roncada threatened to catch Emig by cutting the lead in half, but Dowd pulled away again towards the end of the race. The finishing order was John Dowd (Yam), Stephane Roncada (Hon), and Michael Brandes third.
The 250 main was a toss-up as to who would win. Lusk looked fast as did Henry on the crowd favorite 4-stroke, McGrath is capable of anything, Emig, Damon Huffman and Windham had also shown great speed. When the mass of motorcycles exited the first corner after a clean start it was the 4-stroke of Henry a nose ahead with McGrath, Emig, Albertyn, Huffman, Windham, Ward and Craig in close pursuit. What an incredible an unusual site, all the top riders out in front through the first corner - no excuses, it's time to race.
McGrath pressured Henry for the first two laps or so showing him a wheel but never making it by - the crowd goes crazy! Amazingly, lap after lap goes by and Henry holds off the troops. In fact, he pulls a slight lead leaving McGrath and Emig to fight for second. Behind them is Albertyn, Windham, Huffman, Pichon, LaRocco, Ward, Craig and oh yes, Tortelli (remember his position 11th).
The beginning of lap 5 sees McGrath partially stepping off his bike upon landing, hopping a few steps to stay with the bike and jumping back on - a great save. This lets Emig slip by to the second position to pursue Henry. Lap 6 sees Huffman and Albertyn take each other out in the corner leading to the hill to the finish jump.
End of lap 8 Pichon passes McGrath for 3rd and quickly goes after Emig. Henry continues to pull out a 2 - 3 second lead over the entire 2-stroke field. The crowd is now beginning to feel it might be possible for him to continue this awesome ride to the checkered flag. This is exciting stuff, as the crowd has been on it's feet from the green flag on. Suddenly lusk catches up to Windham high in the air over one of the tracks huge triple jumps. They bang into each other, lock up and fall to the ground. Somehow Windham continues on as Lusk hits the ground with his Suzuki. He grabs at his elbow and then remounts to continue, loosing a number of positions.
Beginning lap 14, Henry has 3 seconds on Emig who has only 1 second on McGrath. Unnoticed is Kawasaki mounted Tortelli (remember him in 11th) running now in fourth place. With 5 laps to go Tortelli suddenly comes by McGrath and a lap later smokes by Emig like he's standing still. With two laps to go Tortelli is pushing on Henrys back wheel and everyone begins wondering who this rider is and where he came from. Is he a lapped rider who suddenly sped up? He can't possible be on the same lap ... can he? This entire final which has been a war between Henry, Emig and McGrath is suddenly turned upside down. The crowd is ready for a Doug Henry Yamaha 4-stroke wire-to-wire win, but that now looks impossible as this rider from nowhere is pushing the leader like nobody else has done.
On the corner leading to the white flag, Tortelli shoots by Henry leaving the crowd in awe. In the next corner after the finish jump, the just passed Henry drops the bike in the rutted muddy corner. Emig goes by, McGrath and others pass as Henry remounts. Tortelli pulls out a 5 second lead to take the win followed by Emig, McGrath, Pichon, Windham, Abertyn, Ward, Craig, Lawrence, LaRocco, Henry and Lusk. It just doesn't get better than this! Congratulations to all the riders and Pace who put on an excellent event.
