Welcome to 1998 KTM four-stroke technology. KTM intends to continue their dominance of four-stroke technology and the racing world. The 1998 models are built around he championship winning '97 technology with improvements made to insure continued success. The 1998 KIM LC4 line once again represents Quality, Performance, and Innovation.
The 1998 KTM LC4 Model Line
LC4 400 R/XCe, 620 R/XCe, Electric start Dual Sportmotorcycles
The KTM 400 & 620 R/XCe models, are even better for 1998. Lower seat height, and other refinements have been made to enhance performance and rider comfort. And the 1998 white, gray, and silver graphics combination has resulted in a beautiful package that looks great on the trail or on the highway. (Photo)
LC4 620 Rally Adventure, electric start
After years of Dakar Rallye domination, KTM is proud to announce the addition of an all-new model to our LC4 model line: the KTM 620 Rally Adventure. This Dakar Rallye replica is available in both an offroad model or a 50 state fully homologated street legal version. Both models feature the KTM 620 LC4 electric start counterbalanced motor. The Rally Adventure comes standard with 50mm forks, a 7.4 gallon fuel tank, WP rear monoshock, and Metzeler Sahara front & rear tires. The Rally Adventure is perfect for long trips, desert rally competition, or just a quick trip to the market when you want to look different.
LC4 400 E/XC, 620 E/XC
World Enduro and ISDE Championship winning seasons have helped us build the finest off road four stroke motorcycles available. Improvements for 1998 include new lightweight silencers, improved transmission gear ratios, WP 50mm Extreme conventional front forks, and reduced unit weight.LC4 620 SX
With the help of Lance Smail, Tom Moen, and KTM's Championship motocross seasons, we have created a four stroke machine that is better than ever. The 620 SX features all the improvements of its off road cousins, but also has a steeper rake angle for quicker steering, a removable aluminum sub-frame, a Del'Orto PHM 40 SD carb, and Bridgestone M77 & M78 competition tires.
A World of KTM Quality
Outstanding new features await you at a local KTM dealer. We weren't satisfied with revolutionary new suspensions, radical new styling, or heart-pounding new motors! We insisted on the same high quality components KTM is known for, and we got 'em.USFS approved spark arrestor on all E/XC & M/XC models to protect nature and meet necessary requirements.
0-ring chains and diamond hard aluminum rear sprockets on all E/XC and M/XC models.High quality Domino controls.
Bearing mounted brake pedal.High quality forged aluminum brake levers, folding shift levers, and kickstart levers.
19 inch Excel rims on all SX models, 18 inch DID rims on all E/XC & M/XC models.Bridgestone M77 tires on all models.
Enduro equipped right out of the box. Each E/XC model KTM comes complete with enduro gear, including an odometer, light coil ignition, and enduro-ready lighting gear.Aluminum Handlebars stock on all models.
Front fender braces on all E/XC models.Removable aluminum subframes.
PDS PROGRESSIVE DAMPING SUSPENSION
Yhe KTM & WP PDS suspension system is truly the most advanced suspension system in the world today. Our new Progressive Damping Suspension is the culmination of a partnership between KTM and WP engineers, and years of research.
The heart of the PDS system is the new WP 'Smart Shock', the first shock with a brain. The new smart shock is both speed and position sensitive, thus eliminating the need for heavy, complex linkage designed to provide a rising-rate function.
1998 KTM New Model Features & Improvements
PDS Rear Suspension System
In the world of off road motorcycles, KTM has always been recognized as a leader in technological innovation. For '98 KTM has again raised the mark. PDS, or Progressive Damping System is what all future suspension configurations will aspire to, and KTM has it today, exclusively.
Working directly with the suspension engineers at WP, KTM developed the 1998 WP 'Smart Shock', the first shock with a brain. Essentially, the WP 'Smart Shock' is both speed and position sensitive, eliminating the need for complex linkage elaborately engineered to accomplish the same task. The WP shock dual-piston and proprietary needle valve design produces a completely progressive rising rate with virtually limitless adjustability.
WP 50mm Extreme Fork
The 50mm tubes on these stanchions are the most rigid, flex-free components yet offered by any suspension manufacturer. With increased rigidity, front end imprecision is a thing of the past. The new forks are lighter and have less underhang than any other conventional model. Razor-sharp steering control will allow the new KTM rider to slice to the front of the pack like never before.
Extreme is appropriate for these newly developed 50mm diameter conventional forks from WP. Extremely lightweight, rigid, compliant and adjustable, with a range of adjustment broad enough to meet the personal preferences of most any rider, in any track conditions.
KTM Ergonomic Chassis Design
The all-new KTM motorcycles were built around a completely redesigned chassis with new frame, subframe, seat, airbox, suspension, and bodywork components. The new main frames are constructed with expensive, high strength, chromoly tubing. This is one of the lightest, strongest and most rigid frame structures ever used on an off road motorcycle. The flex-free construction and new geometry of the chassis is tuned for maximum stability, yet with the mobility and precision to cut corners like a knife.
The style built into the bodywork on the '98 KTM's was not intended to be a work of art, it just turned out that way. The new "Z" design radiator. Air scoops flow 30% more life-giving air into the aluminum coolers, for more consistent engine performance and even greater reliability.
The narrow, flat seat and slender chassis design allows freedom of movement like never before. Transferring weight onto the front wheel becomes a easy act.
The new PDS suspension design provided space for a new airbox design that uses a vortex ramming effect to pump air to the carburetor. Rear- facing scoops help keep dirt and water away from the filter, easing maintenance chores and increasing reliability on the trail.
KTM Power
KTM engineers worked overtime this year, striving to build the best motors ever placed in an off-road frame. Their efforts culminated in three totally new ground-breaking motors, promising to set new standards in their class.
The New Engines
The new for '98 125 and 200cc models are marvels of modern engineering. Power output, engine characteristics, clutch action, gear ratios and gear changing were all considered carefully as this new engine was created, and the finished result is a powerplant beyond comparison. The new 125 and 200 engines feature a planetary gear- driven exhaust power valve system, right side kickstarts, and hydraulically activated clutches. New lever ratios in the shift mechanism has taken changing gears to a new level of effortlessness. Everything within this engine was designed for performance, and it shows in the finished product.
KTC Leads the Way
Improved 250, 300, and new 380cc motors bark performance in the bigger engine classes. Highlights of these new engines include new cylinders and refined power valves, both pouring out power through the new KTM KTC torque chamber. KTM engineers found a way to increase low-end power through essentially lengthening the headpipe at low rpm's. The result is potent bottom-end power and throttle response combined with the perfect mid-range hit and smooth top-end.
Keihin "rocket carbs" for that perfect mix
Common to the two-stroke KTM line is the new Keihin "Rocket" carburetor, the state of the art in fuel air mixers. Now it's a snap to tune your KTM to any altitude or atmospheric condition, and every molecule of fuel is turned into serious forward motion.
