The newest of Honda's ATV models is the FourTrax 400EX, an all-new sport ATV with the most powerful four-stroke engine ever offered in a Honda ATV. The engine traces its roots to Honda's popular XR400R off-road bike. That means it's a 397cc air-cooled four-stroke single with a Radial Four Valve Combustion Chamber (RFVC) for maximum combustion efficiency, and a gear-driven counterbalancer for smoothness. For use in the FourTrax 400EX, though, Honda engineers altered the cam timing, as well as the gear ratios in the five-speed transmission, then beefed-up the clutch, and fitted a 0.5mm-smaller carburetor (35.5mm), all to make the powerplant more suitable for sport ATV use. An electric starter makes it easier to get the action going.
The FourTrax 400EX's chassis is just as sophisticated as its powerplant. The round-tube steel frame features a removable subframe, as well as independent front suspension and a Pro-Link rear suspension, both with long wheel-travel, 8.3 inches in front and 9.1 inches at the back. All the Pro-Link components are crafted of aluminum for light weight, and act on a fully adjustable Showa shock. The swingarm itself is a strong and durable one-piece cast aluminum piece, a first for Honda ATVs. Other features include lightweight aluminum wheels with radial tires and triple-disc hydraulic brakes. We can't wait to ride this all new model!
