NEW! MOUNTAIN SRX
700
Let's start at the top, with the
new Mountain SRX 700. The first thing
you'll
notice when you set your eyes on this sled is the new hood shape,
painted in the stunning blue color of Team Yamaha racers. Backing
up that competitive look is equally powerful performance under
the hood. Tucked deep and low in the lightweight ProAction System
chassis is a high-tech, three-cylinder 696 cc engine with new
engineering, attached to triple exhaust pipes tuned to maximize
horsepower.
Compact and lightweight, the
Yamaha powerplant has a new crankcase, crankshaft, cylinders,
pistons and heads. Engineering features include triple TM33
flat-slide carbs, case reed induction and triple exhaust ports.
Yamaha engineers report the new engine delivers the highest
horsepower in its class, offering deep-powder riders the ultimate
in Yamaha performance for the '97-'98 riding season.
ELECTRONIC POWER
VALVES
Triple pipes account for a good
share of the big HP advance in the new SRX. Another is Yamaha's
ability to design and build the trickest, highest-tech features
in the sport. On the SRX, that includes a computer-controlled
exhaust power valve system, with technology borrowed from gran
prix motorcycle racing.
Competitive power valve designs
are activated by exhaust pressure or cylinder pressure. Yamaha's
new system is electronically controlled. A computer monitors
engine RPM, then feeds the information to a servo motor. The
motor in turn adjusts the exhaust valves for optimum timing and
maximum horsepower across the entire powerband.
Yamaha engineers also made the
power valve system self cleaning, preventing carbon buildup and
valve sticking problems sometimes experienced with competitive
systems.
Another SRX exclusive is a new air
management system designed to control air flow from intake to
muffler for maximum performance. There's an advanced air flow
design within the crankcase engineered to optimize scavenging
efficiency and horsepower, and large-diameter triple exhaust
pipes are shaped for efficient exhaust flow and maximum power.
ADDITIONAL
FEATURES
If all this premium, high-tech
engineering isn't enough to grab the attention of
performance-minded mountain riders, the following list of
additional features on the new Mountain SRX 700 certainly will:
- The 136-inch Mountain Master
Track has a 1.5-inch high profile for superior traction
and flotation.
- New! Plastic skis are light
in weight and enhance sidehilling.
- New! Large-diameter
speedometer and tachometer are easy to read.
- New! Large, 34 mm crankshaft
and new roller bearing design provide extra durability
for the high-output 700 engine.
- New! Large-capacity heat
exchangers help optimize cooling.
- New! 15-plate drive chain is
designed to handle the power of the SRX engine.
- New! Powder metal forged
pistons, brand new technology from Formula I automobile
racing, enhance performance and durability.
- New! Plastic suspension
wheels are lightweight and efficient.
- New! Thermostat in cooling
system allows engine maintain a consistent temperature.
- New! Large-capacity coils in
Digital C.D. ignition provide strong, consistent ignition
spark.
- New! Engine torque rod
maintains clutch center-to-center distance for optimal
performance.
- New! Liquid-heated
carburetors to maintain throttle response and fuel
economy.
- Lightweight, ProAction System
chassis with all-aluminum frame and one-piece, die-cast
aluminum bulkhead subframe has up to twice the torsional
rigidity of competitive designs for premium handling.
- Advanced independent Front
Suspension uses long, tapered trailing arms for superior
strength. Spindles feature large, wide splines to
maintain ski alignment better than competitive designs.
Rebuildable, aluminum-body KYB gas shocks have adjustable
spring preload. Needle bearings minimize friction.
Link-type stabilizer bar enhances handling.
- ProAction Plus X long-travel
rear suspension is consistently rated #1 for the plushest
ride in snowmobiling. Rebuildable, aluminum-bodied KYB
gas shocks have 1 1.5 inches of true, useable travel.
Bearings or bushings at key pivot points reduce friction
for quick, efficient action. A 3-position rear shock
mount allows changing effective spring rate without
changing springs.
- Advanced hydraulic brake
features a high-quality Nissin master cylinder with
"dog-leg" lever requiring one or two-finger
effort. Rotor has interpassage ventilation for low brake
temps and consistent braking. Separate mechanical parking
brake.
- Two-position bracket allows
rear suspension to be adjusted for greater chassis
clearance in deep snow.
- Mid-height windshield, full
instrumentation, industry-exclusive adjustable hand and
thumb warmers and a 12 gallon fuel tank.
MOUNTAIN MAX 700
After a season of taking riders to the top, this
deep-snow performer is back. The Mountain Max 700 features the
lightest three cylinder engine on the market. In fact, it's also
lighter than some twin-cylinder powerplants. With a 698 cc
displacement, it has triple exhaust ports, and a single, tuned
exhaust pipe to maximize power while it minimizes weight.
New for 98 on the Mountain Max 700
are plastic skis, engineered to be lightweight and enhance
sidehilling. Other deep-snow features include:
- 136-inch Mountain Master
Track with 1.5-inch high profile.
- ProAction Plus long-travel
rear suspension with 11.5 inches of travel and spring
preload adjusters.
- 3-position rear shock mount
that allows changing effective spring rates without
changing springs.
- Two-position bracket that
allows greater chassis clearance for those who ride in
extreme snow depths.
- 38.5-inch ski stance for
enhanced handling and sidehilling in deep snow.
- Adjustable hand and thumb
warmers and a 12 gallon fuel tank.
- Heat Red paint, new graphics,
new two-color seat design.
MOUNTAIN MAX 600
