NEW! MOUNTAIN SRX 700

Let's start at the top, with the new Mountain SRX 700. The first thing Mountain SRX 700you'll notice when you set your eyes on this sled is the new hood shape, painted in the stunning blue color of Team Yamaha racers. Backing up that competitive look is equally powerful performance under the hood. Tucked deep and low in the lightweight ProAction System chassis is a high-tech, three-cylinder 696 cc engine with new engineering, attached to triple exhaust pipes tuned to maximize horsepower.

Compact and lightweight, the Yamaha powerplant has a new crankcase, crankshaft, cylinders, pistons and heads. Engineering features include triple TM33 flat-slide carbs, case reed induction and triple exhaust ports. Yamaha engineers report the new engine delivers the highest horsepower in its class, offering deep-powder riders the ultimate in Yamaha performance for the '97-'98 riding season.

ELECTRONIC POWER VALVES

Triple pipes account for a good share of the big HP advance in the new SRX. Another is Yamaha's ability to design and build the trickest, highest-tech features in the sport. On the SRX, that includes a computer-controlled exhaust power valve system, with technology borrowed from gran prix motorcycle racing.

Competitive power valve designs are activated by exhaust pressure or cylinder pressure. Yamaha's new system is electronically controlled. A computer monitors engine RPM, then feeds the information to a servo motor. The motor in turn adjusts the exhaust valves for optimum timing and maximum horsepower across the entire powerband.

Yamaha engineers also made the power valve system self cleaning, preventing carbon buildup and valve sticking problems sometimes experienced with competitive systems.

Another SRX exclusive is a new air management system designed to control air flow from intake to muffler for maximum performance. There's an advanced air flow design within the crankcase engineered to optimize scavenging efficiency and horsepower, and large-diameter triple exhaust pipes are shaped for efficient exhaust flow and maximum power.

If all this premium, high-tech engineering isn't enough to grab the attention of performance-minded mountain riders, the following list of additional features on the new Mountain SRX 700 certainly will:
