1998 YAMAHA TRAIL BIKES:
Fit for fun and function!

We all must learn to crawl before we can walk and -- eventually -- run and the 1998 line of Yamaha off-road play bikes is designed with that in mind. This year's improvements to Yamaha's very successful PW50, PW80, RT100 and RT180 make its 1998 line-up more exciting then ever. Yamaha's play bikes are tailor-made for trail riding fun for the entire family.

In a family of off-road starter bikes, the PW50 is truly the youngest member. Designed for introducing kids to the fun of riding, the PW50 provides easy starting, a single-speed automatic transmission and a throttle limiter so parents can gradually increase the bike's power as the rider's skill level increases. The bike is powered by a peppy 49cc two-stroke engine.

The PW50 remains an entry-level, play-bike class leader with features including a compact wheelbase for quicker and tighter turns, an exhaust pipe which is smartly tucked out of the way, full front and rear suspension, drum brakes on each wheel, and single speed automatic transmission.

For an enhanced level of rider comfort and control, the 1998 PW50 features plush rear suspension. Coil spring and oil damper shocks replaced the previous grease dampening type, resulting in a more comfortable ride. Coming standard with an Autolube Oil Injection system, the PW50 eliminates the chore of premixing gas and oil. Other low maintenance features include mag-type wheels instead of spokes, a CDI electronic ignition and an exclusive shaft drive system.

Styled after its YZ siblings, the 1998 PW50 color scheme replicates Team Yamaha's blue and white factory works graphics and is available in August at Yamaha dealerships nationwide.

PW80
Taking a step up from the PW50 is the PW8, a starter bike for more skilled or older off-roaders. The PW80 is the only model in its class with an automatic clutch and a simple three-speed transmission which teaches new riders the basics of shifting.

The PW80 is powered by a 79cc two-stroke engine for an easy ride. Other features include a progressive single shock rear suspension and telescopic forks for off-road performance. At 126 pounds, the PW80 is the lightest motorcycle in its class.

The PW80 is equipped with a handy grab-strap behind the seat for loading convenience and large heat shields on the engine and exhaust to protect the rider. The bike also offers an Automatic Oil Injection system which eliminates the hassles of premixing and has an accessible air box for easy filter maintenance.

RT100
The RT100's low seat height and light weight provide the mid-sized; intermediate/ beginner rider with a well-balanced, confidence-inspiring ride. This bike combines the smooth ride of a refined 97cc two-stroke engine with "big bike" features like a versatile five-speed transmission and a manual clutch for the more experienced off-road rider.

The mid-size RT100 utilizes 18 inch front and 16 inch rear wheels with aggressive knobby tires for off-road traction, and durable front and rear drum brakes for impressive stopping power. The RT100 also features proven front forks and preload-adjustable twin rear shocks, for a smooth ride; a maintenance-free electronic CDI ignition; a quiet USFS-approved spark arrestor and Yamaha's Automatic Oil Injection system.

RT180
Simply put, RT180 is one of the best values in a performance-oriented play bike. Bridging the gap between the high-performance YZ125 and the entry-level RT100, the RTl80 features a lively 176cc two-stroke engine with a six-speed transmission and manual clutch to provide spirited off-road performance.

Like the other members of the Yamaha play bike family, the RT1 80 features the Automatic Oil Injection system which eliminates the premixing of gas and oil. The maintenance-free CD ignition creates a hot spark for easy starting and strong engine performance. The RT180 also features a 3.4 gallon fuel tank for extended rides and more fun between fill-ups. Harsh off-road terrain is absorbed by 7.9 inches of front travel and a spring preload adjustable single-shock, monocross set up in the rear. Braking performance is enhanced with a 245mm front disc brake and a rear drum system.

To add to its off-road prowess, the RTl80 has a low seat height of only 33.9 inches and weighs only 216 pounds making it easy to handle in tight conditions.

The 1998 RTl80 color scheme replicates Team Yamaha's blue and white factory works graphics and is available at Yamaha dealers nationwide in September.
