1. Team USA Motocross of Nations lineup changed
PICKERINGTON, Ohio (Aug. 24, 2005) -- AMA Pro Racing confirmed today that the lineup for the American team representing the United States at the 2005 Motocross of Nations (MXoN) has been changed. Riders Ricky Carmichael and Kevin Windham remain on the team and Ivan Tedesco has been added to replace Mike Brown. The 2005 MXoN will be held on September 25, at Ernee, France.

AMA Pro Racing MX/SX Series Manager Steve Whitelock made the announcement and said the change was made in consultation with the team. “Over the past couple of weeks Ricky, Kevin and Roger (De Coster, Team Manager) had expressed some concerns to me. At Binghamton last Sunday we discussed it again,” said Whitelock. “Obviously this is a very tough call to make but everyone agreed that we have to do what’s in the best interest of the American effort.” Whitelock stated that he spoke to Brown about the situation at Binghamton on Sunday and then again Monday. “Mike Brown is an accomplished rider and everyone appreciates the commitment he made to supporting the team,” said Whitelock. “Ultimately, however, we have to send the team that has the greatest chance of success and that is what drove us to make this difficult decision.”

2. Lafferty clinches seventh AMA national Enduro Championship with win at round 8 (30.08.2005)
Mike Lafferty clinched his seventh AMA National Enduro Championship title in true championship style by winning the 8th round of the series in Guysville, Ohio this past weekend. Mike was mounted on his KTM 400 EXC which was the same model KTM motorcycle he had selected to compete on during the entire 2005 series.

The 8th round of the series started off on the damp side as rains the previous day provided loose muddy conditions at the start. However, as the day unfolded the track set up perfectly with visibility ideal and near perfect traction for most of the day. Mike started the day strong as he faced eight challenging test sections ranging from six to ten miles each. Like a true champion, Lafferty wouldn’t settle for anything less than the overall even though all he needed to secure the championship was fifteenth place or better. It was in the fifth, sixth and ninth sections that the race was won as Mike gained a point on each of his competitors.

After the event Lafferty said, “This is fantastic. The season started out a little slower than usual for me as I didn’t pull down my first win until the third round. Then I broke my collar bone and with only four weeks for it to heal, I wasn’t sure where I was going to end up. This championship means a lot to me as I’m climbing the ladder to one of the sport’s greatest achievements ever; the all time record of Eight National Enduro Championships held by Dick Burleson. After I won my first title, that record seemed so far away, but now it is within reach. I’ve had a lot of great support along the way, especially from Alan and Melissa Randt, and the whole KTM Off-Road Racing crew. Thank you everyone!” This was Mike’s sixth overall win of the nine round series. It also marks KTM’s 9th AMA National Enduro title in the U.S. Kevin Hines won KTM’s first title back in 1987 followed by Jeff Russell in the early 90’s

3. Pirelli to be brand of tire used for Canada Superbike series
Pirelli is pleased to be chosen by Professional Motorsports Productions (PMP), promoter of the Canada Superbike Championship series, to provide spec tires for the series’ three major classes in 2006. This arrangement was reached by full agreement with all the participating motorcycle manufacturers.

PMP delivered invitations for proposals, to provide spec tires for the Canadian national series, to all of its participating tire suppliers in July of 2004. Pirelli’s proposal was considered by PMP and the manufacturers to be the most in line with the needs of the series, its racers and teams. The classes affected by this agreement are Parts Canada Superbike, Hindle Exhaust Pro 600 Sport Bike, and International Motorcycle SUPERSHOW Amateur 600 Sport Bike.

President of Professional Motorsports Productions, Colin Fraser, said, “Fairness and transparency are the key elements of this deal. Teams will no longer carry their own tires or do their own mounting. Everything will be centralized, just like in World Superbike, World Supersport and a number of European race series. Everyone, privateer and factory rider, will draw from the same choices of tire and compound.” Full tire service and logistics for all riders will be provided by Canadian Pirelli race-tire distributor Kevin Graham, of Orion Motorsport.

Pirelli looks forward to applying the technology it developed during this year’s WSBK involvement to develop a 17" tire for the Canadian series, which is the size rim mandated by the agreement to help reduce costs for competitors and keep the motorcycles as close to stock as possible. The Suzuki SV650 National Cup and the Women’s Cup already uses a spec Pirelli tire and that arrangement will continue.

5. AMA PRO RACING CHAMPIONSHIP AWARDS BANQUET RETURNS TO PARIS LAS VEGAS
(Sept.13th) Banquet rescheduled for November 20th!

PICKERINGTON, Ohio (Sept. 13, 2005) AMA Pro Racing announced today that the AMA Pro Racing Championship Awards Banquet, scheduled to be held on Nov., 19, 2005 at Paris Las Vegas, will now be held the next day, Sunday, Nov. 20. The AMA Pro Racing Championship Awards Banquet honors the leading professional riders who have competed in AMA Motocross, Supercross, Superbike, Flat Track, Supermoto and Hillclimb.

According to Kerry Graeber, AMA Pro Racing Vice President, Director of Communications, the change was made in order to accommodate the AMA-sanctioned Maxxis EnduroCross event which will be held on Saturday at the Orleans Arena.

By moving our banquet to Sunday evening, we cap off an entire weekend of motorcycle related activities, dubbed the AMA Las Vegas Invasion said Graeber. The AMA Sports Award Banquet, where the nation's top amateur riders are honored kicks off the weekend on Friday at the Orleans Hotel and Casino, the action continues on Saturday with the AMA Maxxis EnduroCross event and then we'll culminate the weekend with our AMA Pro Racing Championship Awards Banquet. We are happy to make this change to accommodate everyone's needs.

PICKERINGTON, Ohio (Sept. 1, 2005) -- The 31st annual AMA Pro Racing Championship Awards Banquet will be held at Paris Las Vegas on Nov. 19. Held each year, the banquet culminates AMA Pro Racing’s championship season and honors the leading riders who have competed in AMA Motocross, Supercross, Superbike, Flat Track, Supermoto and Hillclimb.

The top three finishers from each racing discipline will be recognized along with the SPEED Channel Athlete of the Year. Last year’s recipient of the prestigious award was multi-time AMA Motocross and AMA Supercross Champion Ricky Carmichael. Past winners of the award include such legendary riders as Bob Hannah, Scott Parker and Kenny Roberts, among others. Additionally, the top crew members of the year are honored and special awards will be given in the categories of mechanical excellence and race win advertising.

“In addition to showcasing the sport of professional motorcycle racing, the awards banquet is our opportunity to thank the top riders who compete in AMA professional championships,” said Kerry Graeber, AMA Pro Racing Vice President, Director of Communications. “The goal of the banquet is to cap off the racing season in a fun, festive manner while letting the stars of the sport shine. Seeing their personalities come through in a setting other than the race track is one of the best things about the banquet.”

Graeber added that this year’s banquet will again be visually oriented. “Last year, we put more emphasis on video and music and our plan is to continue that approach.” The public is welcome to attend the banquet. Tickets are $125 which includes admission, hors d’oeuvres and dinner. For ticket information, call (614) 856-1900, ext. 1232, or visit www.amaproracing.com.

6. AMA RED BULL SUPERMOTO-A-GO-GO FINALE COMING TO THE STREETS OF RENO
PICKERINGTON, Ohio (Sept. 2, 2005) -- The AMA Red Bull Supermoto-A-Go-Go moves up state Nevada on Saturday, Oct. 1 to cap off the 2005 AMA Supermoto Championship season. After running in the shadow of Las Vegas’ high rise hotels the last two seasons, the AMA Red Bull Supermoto-A-Go-Go finale takes to the streets, on a specially-designed urban course in the heart of downtown Reno, Nev.

The glitz and glamour of the previous AMA Red Bull Supermoto-A-Go-Go races will carry over to Reno-Tahoe, America’s Adventure Place. Reno’s street course is an entertaining layout comprised of high-speed pavement and technical dirt and urban-cross sections constructed on the downtown streets of Reno around Circus Circus Reno, Silver Legacy Resort and Casino, Eldorado Hotel and Casino, and Harrah's Reno. Overlooking the dirt section will be the famous "Biggest Little City in the World" neon sign above Virginia Street.

It’s exciting to race on Reno’s downtown streets,” said AMA Supermoto Champion Jeff Ward. “There are a lot of challenges such as manhole covers, curbs and painted lines, so it’s easily the most technical track we’ll race on. The fans can get up close and personal to the action so that makes it one of a kind.”

2005 marks the third year of the AMA Red Bull Supermoto-A-Go-Go. Road racer Ben Bostrom won the inaugural 2003 AMA Supermoto Championship with a thrilling winner-take-all battle against motocross legends Jeff Ward and Doug Henry. Ward got revenge by winning last year’s championship and Red Bull Supermoto-A-Go-Go title with an exciting late race pass on German ace Jurgen Kunzel. This year’s Reno event is slated to feature a star-studded field including No. 1 plate holder Ward, AMA Superbike ace Eric Bostrom, X-Games Gold medalist Travis Pastrana and a host of other top domestic and international riders.

This year’s event will run over two days and includes a full palette of racing. In addition to the premier AMA Supermoto Championship class, the Red Bull event will also feature the AMA Supermoto Unlimited class as well as the new AMA Supermoto Lites Series and Honda Red Riders Jr. Supermoto Challenge presented by HRCA, all to be held on Saturday. The inaugural AMA Grand Championship amateur event is scheduled to be featured on Sunday.

Last year, the Reno AMA Supermoto round was the best-attended race in the series. Nearly 20,000 fans lined the street course watching from street level or from balconies and other buildings in the area. One of the most popular spots at Reno last year was the section that featured the Parts Unlimited UrbanCross jumps. Riders were soaring at heights even with the third-floor level of adjoining buildings.

“The entire town of Reno is incredibly supportive of this race,” said AMA Supermoto Manager Todd Eagan. “The visual impact of speedy Supermoto bikes running wide open through the city streets is something fans will long remember. It’s easily the most unique setting in the championship.”

This year’s race will be free to the public. Attendees can buy a $10 pass on site that allows access to the pro rider pits. Fans will be able to meet the riders and see the Supermoto machines up close. The race will be televised nationally on OLN on Sunday, Nov. 12 at 5 p.m. EST and re-aired on Wednesday, Nov. 16 at 5:30 p.m. For more information, visit www.olntv.com

7. WCH MX: Pichon signs with KTM for 2006
The Red Bull KTM team line-up for the 2006 FIM Motocross World Championships has been bolstered by the addition of former double World Champion Mickael Pichon who put pen to paper on a one year deal this week to race the MX1 class for next season’s campaign. Pichon will ride alongside another ex World Champ Sebastien Tortelli; forming a ‘dream team’. KTM’s factory MX1 entry will also boast the young talents of Spain’s Jonathan Barragan and Holland’s Marc de Reuver.

“I’m happy with this new deal because the last four or five months have been quite hard,” Pichon, the 2004 MX1 runner-up, commented. “I did not know what to do with my career and I said that I would be prepared to go another year if I could find something serious. With KTM I believe I have what I want and need. It is a factory team and many people think like I think and want to give their best. They treat their riders like they should, and they have a lot of power and resources for developing the bike.”

“I am happy also to work with Pit because in the past he was a great rival but always a nice guy,” the 29 year old continued. “I have a good feeling about the whole situation and for sure I will find that motivation I need for 2006. Both KTM and I badly want to win the Championship; we all want to beat Stefan!” “Having me and Sebastien in the same team is quite special,” he added concerning his countryman. “It is good he is coming back to the GPs. We both have two titles and it is a top set of riders for KTM just after they have lost Ben Townley. Sebastien and I get along well and we were team-mates before in the United States. I think we will do good things for KTM.”

“Mickael deciding to join KTM is exactly what we needed,” said Pit Beirer, one of KTM’s Sport managers. “Our team and structure for next year was ready but we were missing the two big riders needed for the MX1 class; this is the title that is still not part of KTM history. With Sebastien and Mickael we have the strongest team possible. We now have to organise the distribution of our six factory riders for MX1 and MX2.”  “It is not that we want to give less importance to Marc and Jonathan but we want them to develop within our framework and in one or two years be ready to step up into that hot seat. We can only hope that they progress and get some good results next season.”

9. PROPOSED 2006 AMA SUPERBIKE RULES ANNOUNCED
PICKERINGTON, Ohio (Aug. 3, 2005) -- AMA Pro Racing has announced the proposed technical rule changes for the 2006 AMA Superbike Championship presented by Parts Unlimited. Proposed rule changes were developed by AMA Pro Racing staff with input from the AMA Road Race advisory board which is comprised of representatives from teams and riders.

Proposed technical rule changes for the 2006 season can be viewed at www.amasuperbike.com.

AMA Pro Racing licensed riders and credential holders may comment on proposed rule changes during a 30-day period beginning Thursday, Aug. 4 through Saturday, Sept. 3. Comments can be made via FAX, mail or through the AMA Pro Racing’s RIDERS ONLY website at www.amaproracing.com/ridersonly. At the conclusion of the 30-day period, AMA Pro Racing will review submissions prior to forwarding the package to the AMA Pro Racing Board of Directors for ratification.

On May 26, AMA Pro Racing announced that 1000cc motorcycles would remain in AMA Superbike through the 2008 racing season. This announcement was followed up with another notification on June 17 that class structures for the AMA Superbike Championship were unchanged for 2006. The series is comprised of four classes. AMA Superbike is the premier class followed by three support classes: AMA Supersport, AMA Formula Xtreme and AMA Superstock.

According to Merrill Vanderslice, AMA Pro Racing Director of Competition, bringing stability to the series has been a primary objective. “The manufacturers and top teams have asked us to provide them with as much lead time as possible so they could more easily formulate their planning,” said Vanderslice. “Announcing that AMA Superbike would be 1000cc-based for at least three more racing seasons is an example of that commitment.” Vanderslice also commented that the 30-day rules comment period was an important part of the rule-making process. “After AMA Pro Racing staff and advisory board members finalize the proposed rules for the upcoming season, the comment period adds another, vital level of input. In the past, comments received during this process have had a direct impact on the final rules package,” confirmed Vanderslice.

10. Harden-Offroad to offer Nevada Rally Experience Again
America's only Rally Raid style event
The second annual Nevada Rally Experience will be held Sept. 23rd to 25th in Caliente, NV.  Promoted by Harden-Offroad and Best in the Desert, the NRE is an authentic Rally Raid style event for large displacement dual sport motorcycles. “Except for the fact that the event is non-competitive (i.e; it is not a race), we’ve designed the Nevada Rally Experience to be as close to participating  in an actual “marathon” rally raid as there is this side of Dakar,” stated Harden. The NRE re-traces the route of the only rally raid event ever held in the United States, the Nevada Rally (The Nevada Rally was promoted by Acerbis and Best in the Desert from 1993-95). Entrants are provided a Roadbook and GPS route data in order to navigate the 6 liaisons and 8 special tests that make up the 390 mile long three day event.

The NRE will bivouac in Caliente, NV. Entrants have the option of “moteling” it in town or camping under the desert stars in an authentic bivouac setting. According to Scot Harden, “We’ve even designed the meals and bivouac experience to mirror the legendary Dakar Rally”. The only major area where we break with the current Dakar format is that we’ve designed the route to accommodate 700cc and over twin cylinder Dual Sports like the KTM 950 Adventure and the BMW GS.

The Nevada Rally Experience is not just another dual sport event. It combines the unique aspects of on and off road riding while adding the element of the Rally format.  It is designed to challenge but not overwhelm the rider. Most important of all, the Nevada Rally Experience is about the shared camaraderie that can only be experienced during an actual Rally.

“With the increased awareness and interest in Dakar, we wanted to let Americans get a little taste of what a true rally raid event is all about.” This event is very authentic and will be used as a training exercise for the 2006 Red Bull KTM US Dakar squad. The route is awesome and covers a large portion of the Great Basin in eastern Nevada.  The challenge will be to navigate the route we’ve laid out using the roadbook and waypoints from the start to finish”, said Harden.

A short classroom introduction to Rally navigation will be taught by Harden and is included as part of the event. The NRE is limited to 50 riders. For more information on the NRE visit the official Harden Offroad website www.harden-offroad.com or call 951-491-1819.

11. KTM will no longer provide engines to Team Roberts
Austrian motorcycle company KTM has announced that it is no longer in a position to act as engine supplier to Team Roberts in the MotoGP World Championship. The decision was taken after careful consideration by KTM management but does not impact on KTM’s participation in other FIM Road Racing categories. KTM Chief Executive Officer, Mr Stefan Pierer, has confirmed that the company will continue to enter factory teams in the 125cc and 250cc world championships. In 2006, the KTM 250cc team will be expanded to a two rider squad following the successful debut of the new machine which finished second on the podium at last month’s British Grand Prix. And KTM’s three-rider 125cc grand prix team is currently dominating that championship, with three riders in the top six of the points. KTMs have won five of the nine GPs so far this season. The decision to end the supply of the KTM 990cc, V4 engine is based on a number of factors, including the change to the new 800cc MotoGP engine regulations in 2007.

For 2005 KTM’s sole aim was to be an engine supplier to a fully operational team. The company’s primary interest was engine supply, and not to support a factory-backed KTM MotoGP team. Team Roberts were free to raise additional sponsorship and funding for the project. KTM recognizes that this undertaking has not been an easy task. To assist the project further KTM made available significant, and additional funding, over and above the cost of engine supply. KTM contracted and paid team rider Shane ‘Shakey’ Byrne and agreed to fund the supply of Michelin tyres for the MotoGP season.
KTM’s current budgets do allow for any request for funding over and above these three key areas -engine supply, rider contract and cost of tires. KTM management also considered the impact of short-term investment in further development of the 990cc motor, which would become extinct at the end of the 2006 season. For 2007, another significant investment would be required for an all-new 800cc motor for the MotoGP championship. For these reasons, and in an effort to focus on their 125 and 250 GP projects, KTM has decided to cease MotoGP engine supply. In light of the new 800cc regulations any future involvement in MotoGP will be taken after a further assessment of the competition requirements best suited for the promotion of the KTM brand. KTM would like wish Team Roberts every success in its future racing endeavors.
