Updated: Dec. 2002 As the release of the 2002 919 draws near (in dealers January 2002), we got a sneak peak from Honda. As the naked sport bike segment has been the fastest growing segment in America, Honda could no longer ignore the trend. After all, their Hornet 600 was their number one seller in Europe. Once you throw a leg over the 919, you can't help but notice how comfortable the bike feels. There's plenty of leg room, no tight knee bend, and your knees tuck in nicely against the sculpted flat black fuel tank. The bar bend is mostly upright and the seat feels quite good. We haven't been able to ride the bike yet, though we certainly look forward to doing so. The bikes engine is based on that of the now defunct CBR900RR, though it's now tuned to produce low end and mid-range torque, rather than peak horsepower. Those who have ridden the bike describe it as fun, fun, fun. There's plenty of low end power on tap, as well as an excellent power to weight ratio. Interesting Model Information: MSRP $7,999 US - 43mm Cartridge type forks - Extremely crisp and responsive fuel delivery - Steel frame that is virtually unseen - Manual choke - Standard with either Michelin or Bridgestone tires - Claimed dry weight of 427 pounds - Carries warning not to try polishing the flat finish - Same valve size as CBR900RR - Shim under bucket valve adjustment (16K miles) - Engine weight 3 pounds heavier than CBR900RR - Same muffler volume as 900RR - 19 Liter tank - 49 state and CA versions - Uses larger 530 chain There's a lot to like about the 919, but there are a few things we're not crazy about. The forks for one, are non-adjustable. The shock is slightly better, but only offers a preload adjustment. The gauges, while comprehensive enough, are a throw back (old) design rather than something new and exciting. The lack of a small windshield or fairing is notable, as competitors in this class offer something to cheat the wind. Honda is admittedly working on a small accessory windscreen, but you'll have to pay extra for it. These things aside, we can't wait to throw a leg over a runner. MN

Engine/Drivetrain

• Compact 919cc DOHC liquid-cooled inline four-cylinder engine is tuned for low-end and mid-range power for spirited acceleration. 
• One-piece upper crankcase/cylinder assembly, right-side cam-drive design and a narrow, 32 degree included valve angle help make the 919 engine the lightest, most compact powerplant in its class. 
• Sixteen-valve cylinder head with a 10.8:1 compression ratio promotes efficient combustion and horsepower production. 
• Direct shim-under-bucket valve actuation system is compact, ensures high-rpm durability and allows 16,000-mile valve maintenance intervals. 
• High-pressure programmed fuel injection (PGM-FI) delivers fuel at 50 psi to four injectors, each mounted in a 36mm throttle body. 
• Fuel is delivered through four laser-drilled nozzle holes in each injector, producing a highly atomized air/fuel charge for maximum combustion efficiency and power. 
• Advanced programmed fuel injection (PGM-FI) features a sophisticated throttle sensor and advanced fuel-injection mapping to produce smooth and linear throttle response, responding precisely to fine throttle adjustments. 
• 16-bit electronic control unit (ECU) provides two digital 3-D fuel injection maps for each cylinder and one digital 3-D ignition map for cylinder pairs, creating ideal fuel mixture and spark advance settings for superb rideability. 
• Liquid-cooled oil cooler and a lightweight aluminum radiator keep engine temperatures in check for consistent performance and long engine life. 
• Spring-loaded scissors-type gear on the drive side of the crankshaft and a rubber-mounted, floating clutch-cover help reduce noise.
